One problem with issues like today's bomb threat is we have to make judgments about the competence of the Fairview administration based on partial information. But it's our children's lives at stake and so we do need to make judgments on what we know. Here is the email from Fairview.
Dear Fairview High Parent and Guardian Community:
To keep each of you as fully informed as possible, I need to let you know of an incident involving a telephoned message to Fairview High School this morning threatening a bomb in our school. Law enforcement and BVSD staff searched FHS and no suspicious item was found.
While the actual nature of the telephoned threat was perceived by law enforcement and BVSD Security to be at a relatively low level, our responsibility for the safety of each of our students, staff members and visitors required us to treat this threat seriously to ensure student safety.
The following message was read to FHS students at the beginning of 7th period:
"Fairview received a call this morning that warned us of a bomb threat. Boulder Police have worked closely with BVSD staff to search the school for any suspicious items. Nothing has been found, but every precaution is being taken. Students, we encourage you that if you see anything suspicious, please tell a school staff member right away."
As principal, I'm very sorry to give parents this unsettling and frustrating news but I wanted to give you as precise a picture as possible of what has occurred.
I am asking any student, parent or guardian who believes that he or she may have information helpful to the Boulder police in their investigation of this incident and she or he wish to remain anonymous to please call either the Boulder Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 303-440-7867 or the Safe to Tell Tip Line at 877-542-7233 with any information that he or she has.
As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns that you have at either [email protected] or 720-561-5329.
Thank you,
Don Stensrud
Principal
Based on what Stensrud wrote up there, they heard about the threat in the morning but didn't ask the students to look for anything suspicious until 7th period. What the fuck were they thinking? If they were concerned enough that they wanted to have the students keep an eye out – tell them immediately. Heightened awareness is a very powerful tool. But only if done in time.
Grade for Stensrud & team on today's incident: F-
