The United States Secret Service has dispatched a protective detail to assume the immediate protection of Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., a source tells ABC News, indicating in all likelihood that Biden has been officially notified that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, has selected him to be his running mate.
It is amazing that they were able to keep it confidential this long. But I guess the secret service does need to move before the announcement.
I think this may be a brilliant move
Ok, on the surface this is Obama bringing in someone with boatloads of experience to answer the inexperienced charge leveled against him. And it does do that - and on foreign affairs which has become important recently with Russia as well as Afghanistan heating up.
But I think there is a subconscious part that is even bigger. America is ready to elect a black man as president. But, at the same time, many many people are unsure of exactly what it means. And that makes people uneasy.
Joe Biden is white male establishment. Possibly the most establishment politician in Washington. More so than even John McCain.
When people see the two of them together it will go a long way toward quieting the discomfort people have over what it means to elect someone different when his running mate is the epitome of the establishment.
