Add to the Only in Boulder list - we have 5 environmental groups all telling us which candidates are best for Boulder the environment. Of course, this is Boulder so we have quite a bit of disagreement between the groups.
First, be assured, that it is entirely a coincidence that all 5 groups announced their choices on the same day. Just move along, nothing to see here. (Sometimes I wonder if all 5 groups are just 1 person and he or she does slightly different lists just to play with our minds.)
Second, major kudos to B.O.C. for being honest about only considering half the candidates for endorsement. We know most of the groups do this - but B.O.C. was honest about it, and has promised to fairly evaluate all candidates next election. I believe them and respect them for how they handled this.
On the flip side, The Boulder Mountainbike Alliance is clearly practicing the same blatant discrimination - but is just matter of fact that that is how they operate. I hope the community lets BMA know how repugnant this is. Discrimination should have no place in Boulder.
And I hope PBC and Sierra Club don't get holier than thou on this - look at their results. FIDOS clearly did look wider as their endorsement of Shawn shows. And BOC apologized and seems sincere in looking at everyone next time. But the rest - it's anti-democratic and disgusting.
So lets look at the endorsements - across the spectrum (click on group name for more details):
PBC | Sierra Club | BMA | BOC | FIDOS |
Eugene Pearson | ||||
Susan Peterson | ||||
Macon Cowles | Macon Cowles | Macon Cowles
Crystal Gray | Crystal Gray | Crystal Gray
Lisa Morzel | Lisa Morzel | Lisa Morzel
Susan Osborne | Susan Osborne | Susan Osborne | Susan Osborne | Susan Osborne |
Ken Wilson | Ken Wilson | Ken Wilson | Ken Wilson | Ken Wilson |
Angelique Espinoza | Angelique Espinoza | Angelique Espinoza | Angelique Espinoza
Adam Massey | Adam Massey | Adam Massey
Matt Applebaum | ||||
Shawn Coleman |
From this we get a pretty clear picture of where the candidates fit in the environmental spectrum.
- Eugene Pearson and Susan Peterson pretty clearly are totally lined up with the PBC agenda - and with nothing the other groups find appealing.
- Macon Cowles, Crystal Gray, and Lisa Morzel all manage to appeal to the first three groups. The first two are old school and BMA appears to be the transition group (I'm real curious as to who exactly in BMA made these picks). So these three have the old school support but not that of the newer more independent minded groups.
- Susan Osborne and Ken Wilson - IMPRESSIVE. How on earth they got all 5, how anyone could get all 5 - wow. We'll call them environmentalists for all seasons.
- Angelique almost pulled off a Susan/Ken. I think Angelique didn't get the PBC nod because she has a fierce independent streak that she cannot totally hide - great in a council member but not something PBC wants to see.
- Adam Massey picked up the three rightmost. Adam clearly supports the environment, and people being able to use it. That killed him for PBC and SC but puts him very much in agreement with most of Boulder.
- Matt Applebaum is an outlier. No idea why he got Sierra Club but nothing else. Matt does speak his mind which killed any chances with PBC but looking at the rest, I'm surprised he did not get BMA also.
- And Shawn Coleman is proof that FIDOS was the one group to look beyond the usual suspects.
