The below is a complete quote from Matt Applebaum on the issue of his resignation earlier from council. I think it stands very well on its own pointing out that his resignation was not some conspiracy. He originally posted this on the Camera website and it is re-posted here with his permission.
Descending into the realm of blog-dom probably won't be particularly helpful, but I do need to at least correct a key factual error, get angry at the conspiracy folks (yet again), and make a comment re PLAN-Boulder.
First off, I did not run in 1995 and then resign. Both the Camera and the Daily got that wrong, and they know it. I ran in 1993 and got a 4-year term, so I was not up for reelection in 1995. I resigned because I was required to do so for a job I had gotten in mid-September. I apologize only for not having a trust fund.
To put it mildly, I'm really tired of the nutty conspiracy theorists who think I did something behind the scenes to ensure that Don Mock got my seat. While you might not believe that I simply couldn't conceive of doing something like that, I barely knew Don and would not have chosen him -- although I completely stayed out of the council's decision. Further, it might be interesting to note that some of the folks most involved in suggesting that there was something unfair going on -- Macon Cowles, Steve Pomerance, Lisa Morzel -- are now all supporting me. So this just needs to be treated like any other nutty conspiracy theory, and the folks who can't let it drop need to be, at minimum, completely ignored.
As for PLAN-Boulder, I did indeed serve on its board for many years, and chaired it at well. As I noted in the Camera article, I simply think that we've gone in different directions, as I've broadened my outlook. The Sierra endorsement certainly validates my very long-standing environmental credentials, and I think the PBC action validates my independence, since I don't agree with them on everything and won't pander to any group (as, alas, some candidates are somewhat prone to do) by promising that I'll be beholden to them in any way. PBC is still a fine group, and I hope they continue to do fine work and offer their generally thoughtful opinions -- and should I manage to get elected, I'd be delighted to work with them and any other group, whether endorsed by them or not.
