First off, BVSD generally bends over backwards in the name of inequality. But they do miss the boat occasionally.
The Boulder - Fairview basketball games are played at the Coors Events Center because of the size of the crowd. And they are generally very close intense games. Having several daughters who have played for Fairview I think it's accurate to say that each team finds beating the other more important than winning the state finals.
Both the girls and boys varsity play and the pair of games occur twice, once when Fairview is the home team and a couple of weeks later when Boulder is the home team. And both times the girls play first and the boys second.
That consistant ordering is what discriminates against the girls teams. The crowd for the girls game is pretty small. It grows near the very end but it is only as the boys are about to start that the crowd has grown to several thousand.
Why the difference? It's probably a combination of the start time as 5:30 requires coming straight from work with dinner being a hot dog and the fact that boys games tend to attract more people. But either way, the ordering works against the girls team.
So here's a thought, this contest occurs twice. The second time have the boys play first and the girls second. That would give each one game where people could eat dinner and then go watch their game. And for those that come for just the boys game, some will stay to watch the girls play and see some really good basketball.
I can't think of any reason to not alternate the order - can you?
